Roger Stone’s arrest last week for lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering didn’t just implicate the longtime political strategist and Donald Trump adviser. It suggests Special Counsel Robert Mueller may be getting closer to the president’s inner circle, as he investigates the possibility that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election.

Tucked into page four of the indictment was an intriguing assertion that "a senior Trump Campaign official was directed to contact Stone" to find out more about what emails WikiLeaks was planning to release next. The unnamed campaign official was directed by *someone* — and that someone could be the president himself.

But the next most likely member of Trump's inner circle to become the focus of the Special Counsel's investigation may be Donald Trump Jr., who, as a top adviser to the campaign, was involved in a number of meetings and projects that have come under scrutiny as part of the Mueller probe and multiple congressional investigations.

Congressional investigators are already sounding the alarm that they believe he wasn't entirely honest with them while testifying under oath on the Hill — and if he knowingly lied to lawmakers, that would constitute a felony. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat and member of the Judiciary Committee, told reporters that he wanted a number of individuals to return to Capitol Hill for another round of testimony, to clarify inconsistencies, including Trump Jr.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists held its annual Doomsday Clock event this week, again delivering the grim assessment that the world is on the brink of nuclear annihilation. The Doomsday Clock would remain at two minutes to midnight. After the assembled scientists took turns quantifying their pessimism, the Bulletin introduced its new Executive Chair: legendary four-term California governor, three-time presidential candidate, and ex-boyfriend of Linda Ronstadt, Jerry Brown.

Brown thundered that the world was sleepwalking towards doom. The nine nations that comprise the world's nuke club, he warned, are “playing Russian roulette with humanity.”

At age 80, Brown has finally abandoned the daily tumult of Sacramento politics and retired to his sprawling family ranch--but not from the world of ideas. He sat down with VICE News's Michael Moynihan to discuss his life in politics, what it means to be a “planetary realist,” and why “Governor Moonbeam” is living out his final years as a nuclear Cassandra.

The longest government shutdown in history has been much more than an inconvenience for the roughly 40 million people who rely on food stamps.

The United States Department of Agriculture, which oversees the food stamp program, coordinated with states around the country to send out February benefits before the 21st of January, several weeks earlier than normal. The move was possible because of a provision in the short-term continuing resolution, which helped fund the program for another 30 days after the onset of the shutdown.

But no one knows what's going to happen next, and the lack of answers is creating a bubbling panic throughout the vulnerable populations, as well as the entire ecosystem that's built around the program.

VICE News traveled to Massachusetts, where families are suddenly unsure of how to budget, and programs that are meant to help them navigate the system don't know what to tell them.

"I just try to be careful. I try not to overspend," said Natalie Tejada, who relies on $547 in SNAP benefits every month to stay afloat. "Sometimes I have to put my foot down when it comes to the kids and what they want."

The longest government shutdown in U.S. history cost the economy $11 billion dollars, according to a report yesterday from the Congressional Budget Office — and the agency expects $3 billion of that won’t ever be recovered, even after workers cash their back pay.

This is what it looks like to come back from a 35 day unpaid forced vacation.

Jessica Rosenworcel is one of 4 commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission. She and her fellow commissioners, including Chairman Ajit Pai, oversee the agency. Rosenworcel let VICE News document the first day back at work for her staff and other employees at the agency.

The FCC has just over 1,400 employees and most of them were deemed “non-essential” during the shutdown. During the shutdown, The FCC was able to continue it’s planned 28 GHz spectrum auction, but they were not able to take on many of their regulatory functions.

FCC staff will get back pay for the time they were furloughed, but government contract workers like FCC cafeteria employees will not.

One contract worker we spoke to said he had seven bounced checks during the shutdown. “One check charged $35 [in overdraft fees]. Seven charged $210,” Kevin Lee told VICE News.

Another employee, who works at the cafeteria with her husband, said she only ate ramen noodles during the shutdown.

Several airports along the East Coast are experiencing delays after “staffing issues” among air traffic controllers due to to the government shutdown.

LaGuardia Airport in New York City, Philadelphia International Airport, and Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey, are all operating with delays, according to the FAA’s status website. The Federal Aviation Association (FAA) had briefly halted flights entirely at LaGuardia, one of the busiest airports in the United States, Friday morning, although that notice has now been lifted.

VICE News' Alex Jaffe spoke to some federal workers about how the shutdown could impact U.S. national security.

Fecal transplants have the power to revolutionize medicine, but hospitals need raw materials. At Open Biome, the country’s first independent stool bank right outside Boston, donors earn $40 for each sample.

The clinic, however, approves less than 3 percent of applicants.

Fecal transplants have already essentially cured a severe intestinal infection known as C. diff that kills 29,000 Americans each year. The gut disease, which often exhibits resistance to antibiotics, causes frequent and powerful diarrhea and can even require removing the intestine. But transferring a donor’s healthy stool into the bowels of an unhealthy patient acts like a nuclear-level probiotic to help the body’s healthy microbes replace the infection.

While fecal transplants have a 90 percent success rate treating C. diff, the procedure could also be useful against slew of other diseases linked to the human microbiome, the trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses living inside our bodies.

“We now know that the microbiome is linked to everything from irritable bowel syndrome to rheumatoid arthritis to cardiovascular disease and colon cancer — and then if the work in mice turns out to translate to humans, even things like depression, autism, Parkinson’s,” Rob Knight, a scientist at the University of California, San Diego and the co-founder of both the American Gut Project and the Earth Microbiome Project, said in VICE on HBO’s report on fecal medicine.

For the feces needed to treat C. diff and support numerous clinical trials underway, 960 hospitals have turned to Open Biome. To date, the clinic has received more than 10,000 stool donations and processed over two tons of feces.
